Oh, Haiku
I’m new to writing haikus. It’s a stimulating form to play with. Its simplicity belies how challenging it can be, but that simplicity also invites me not to overthink, which is welcome. Writing in this form – 3 lines, 5 syllables per first and third lines, 7 syllables per second line – flings open a door in my mind and lets a breeze through. Then, I surrender to the flow of words. With a curious approach, I chase others in the desire to make each syllable count. In the attempt to encapsulate a moment in time or an emotion or experience, there is a pleasant thrum.
Stroll to the markets
Peaceful hum on a Sunday
Fresh bread, rising sun
[24 May 2021]
Predawn power walk
Jettisoning the nightmares
Release brings relief
[2 June 2021]
Line up for coffee
Queue for egg and bacon rolls
Then buy vegetables
[5 June 2021]
Little tigers run
Screaming because it’s home time
Sleep on the way home
[5 June 2021]
Running round the Bay
Keys found and left on a branch
A forgotten scarf
[5 June 2021]
I love you so much
Your indifference is crushing
Throwing pearls to swine
[6 June 2021]
The determined wind
The cloudless protective sky
All will be revealed
[8 June 2021]
Chainsaws are groaning
We all need more firewood
Snow is on its way
